My name is Delanei Pinto, I am a visual artist from São Tomé and Príncipe, with a degree in fine arts from Ondokuz Mayıs University (Turkey). From childhood, I developed a deep connection with drawing as a means of expression, which was later consolidated academically at secondary school in São Tomé and Príncipe, where I followed a fine arts curriculum.
My journey has been marked by structural and geographical challenges. After receiving a scholarship to study in Turkey — initially in civil engineering — I chose to redirect my training toward the visual arts, self-funding my studies. This process, prolonged by the pandemic, allowed me to develop resilience, autonomy, and a strong artistic identity.
My artistic practice is born from the need to communicate what words cannot translate. Since childhood, art has become my primary means of expression — a space where critical thinking, identity, and emotion converge.
As an artist from São Tomé living and trained in Turkey, my work is built at the crossroads of cultures. My pieces reflect a fusion between my African roots — marked by memory, identity, and social experience — and the aesthetic and material influences gained in the Turkish context, where tradition and contemporaneity coexist.
The portrait holds a central place in my production. It is not merely the representation of faces, but the reconstruction of histories, dignity, and presence. I seek to reveal the beauty that exists beyond the surface — a beauty that is at once political and human.
Through experimentation with techniques such as graphite, colored pencils, acrylic paint, watercolor, and mixed media relief, I explore materiality as language. The use of texture, volume, and layering of materials is not only formal but conceptual — an attempt to make visible what is often invisible.
This work aims to highlight the transformation of identity, culture, and the body in the contemporary era. The featured works — The Collective Cry, Guardian of the Portal, and Crossing — form the conceptual heart of this portfolio.
The Collective Cry reveals social and historical tension as a visceral and collective expression. Guardian of the Portal articulates materiality and ancestrality as symbolic resistance. Crossing constructs a narrative of displacement, memory, and cultural continuity.
The body appears as an archive, a territory, and an instrument of resistance.
